What do you make of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Boston accent?

The Sherlock actor sounds almost unrecognisable in new film Black Mass

He may be busy treading the boards as Hamlet but Benedict Cumberbatch will be back on the silver screen before we know it in Oscar-tipped flick Black Mass.

Starring Johnny Depp as Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger, the film sees Cumberbatch play his strait-laced brother, Massachusetts State Senator William “Billy” Bulger.

But fans of the Sherlock actor’s cut-glass British speech will be disappointed. As a Massachusetts native, Billy comes with a thick Boston accent, evidence of which can be seen in this clip featuring Cumberbatch (sounding almost unrecognisable) and co-star Joel Edgerton.

What do you make of Cumberbatch’s inflection? Let us know in the comments box below…

Black Mass is released in UK cinemas on 27th November
