We now know exactly what time Doctor Who will return for series 9

Opening episode The Magician's Apprentice finds itself sandwiched between Pointless Celebrities and the National Lottery on BBC1 on Saturday night, and up against the mighty X Factor over on ITV

The Doctor may not be subject to the laws of time, but we are – meaning that, as per BBC confirmation, we’ll be tuning in to watch the new series of Doctor Who at precisely 7:40pm on Saturday 19th September. The Doctor’s probably seen the whole thing already.

The Magician’s Apprentice, starring Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez, finds itself sandwiched between Pointless Celebrities and The National Lottery on BBC1 and will clash with both Keep It In The Family and the X Factor over on ITV. In America, it will air on the same day at 9pm EDT on BBC America.

Written by showrunner Steven Moffat, it will be the first episode of two-part story The Magician’s Apprentice  / The Witch’s Familiar. The synopsis is as follows…

“Where is the Doctor? When the skies of Earth are frozen by a mysterious alien force, Clara needs her friend. But where is the Doctor, and what is he hiding from? As past deeds come back to haunt him, old enemies will come face-to-face, and for the Doctor and Clara survival seems impossible…”
