ITV has revealed that the upcoming live episode of Coronation Street will be broadcast on Wednesday 23 September at 7.30pm.
The 60-minute visit to Weatherfield – which will tie in with the 60th anniversary of ITV – is to be accompanied by a special behind-the-scenes show hosted by Stephen Mulhern, that will transmit at 10pm on ITV2.
The cast now has two full weeks of rehearsals before they go to live to the nation, with an image of the actors doing a script read-through having already been released.
The episode itself will centre on the Platts’ attempts to thwart drug dealer Callum and his plan to extort £20,000 from them.
The backdrop to the drama at the Platts will be Lloyd and Andrea’s leaving party in the Rovers, Roy’s 60th birthday party at the cafe and his burgeoning relationship with Cathy. Meanwhile, there’s a shock in store for Tim when he finds out about Kevin and Sally’s illicit kiss.
Speaking recently about his plan for the episode, producer Stuart Blackburn said: “At the heart of all this is going to be the Platts and their ongoing feud between the good guys – and whoever thought David Platt would be one of the good guys? – and Callum.
“It’s going to be full of shocks and twists and really will make everything that has come before look like a prologue.
“Decisions are going to be made that start with Sarah stupidly thinking she can get one over on Callum. From that point on, all decisions will have ripple effects for years to come. And that’s not just hyperbole. It will happen.”
