FAST & FURIOUS 7 (12) ★★★★

Jason Statham rides out to avenge his brother; specifically, gunning for Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and their posse in what sounds like the plot from a soapy old western, except that there’s a lot more horsepower in them souped-up sports cars. Vroom and, indeed, vroom.

A ROYAL NIGHT OUT (12) ★★★

Her Majesty the Queen lets her hair down before ascending to the throne in an unlikely screwball comedy inspired by the VE celebrations in London, 1945. HRH (Sarah Gadon) carries a drunken Princess Margaret (Benidorm’s Bel Powley) across Hyde Park in a wheelbarrow. As one does.

GIRLHOOD (15) ★★★★

Not so much a cosy companion piece to Boyhood as a sort of Girlz ‘N’ the Hood set in the Parisian housing projects with an in-your-face turn by newcomer Karidja Toure. If you liked La Haine, but you’re fed up of macho “gangsta” films then you’ll want to check this out.

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray and download

ROSEWATER (15) ★★★★

Political satirist Jon Stewart sinks his teeth into something a little more substantial, making his directorial debut with the true story of journalist Maziar Bahari (Gael Garcia Bernal), who was branded a spy by the Iranian government, captured and tortured. There’s some screaming – and a few laughs, too. Who’d have thought it.
