Everything we know about Doctor Who series 9

With the Doctor's return edging ever closer, here's our rolling episode-by-episode guide to what fans can expect from the next run with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman...

Well then, here we are again: that exciting time between series of Doctor Who when filming on the new one is underway and expectant fans are desperate to find out anything they can about it.

Luckily for them, we’ve compiled everything we know so far about series nine, episode by episode, and will be updating it with every new scrap of solid information as we get it.

Here goes…

Episodes 1 and 2 – The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar

Both episodes will be directed by Blink’s Hettie McDonald, with Steven Moffat on writing duties.

It will feature Daleks

Steven Moffat, speaking to SFX: “It features lots of Daleks and this time we mean it!”

And Missy is back

Speaking of her return, which she herself announced via a video, Steven Moffat said: “Everybody hide – Michelle Gomez as Missy was an instant hit last year, so she’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara in the series opener. But what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.”

Missy is to team up with Clara

Steven Moffat, speaking to SFX: “Clara receives a mysterious summons and has to team up with Missy to search for the Doctor in a very, very old place.”

Missy’s relationship with the Doctor is explored

Steven Moffat, speaking to Doctor Who Magazine: “The Master’s always been the Doctor by other means. He/she is the most Doctor-like character in Doctor Who other than the Doctor himself. The one tiny difference is… she’s insane!

“It’s always been the case that they’re sort of best friends, and that they like each other. That character has always just been sort of mischievous and naughty, and not really understanding the Doctor’s fastidiousness about swatting flies. It’s just a friendship between a vegetarian and a hunter.”

The Doctor makes a big mistake

Speaking at San Diego Comic Con, and referring to the picture above, Peter Capaldi said that it, “hints at a battle, it hints at the Doctor being in a very traditional battlefield, in which he tries to help a victim of war… but it backfires.”

“The Doctor [is] about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions,” he later told Entertainment Weekly.

The episode will also feature Jemma Redgrave’s Kate Lethbridge-Stewart

UNIT’s Chief Scientific Officer will return to face the Master once again in series nine’s opening two-parter.

And other guest stars in the episodes will include…

Fans will know actress Clare Higgins as a member of the Sisterhood of Karn, who helped the Eighth Doctor become the War Doctor in mini episode The Night of the Doctor. Kelly Hunter will also appear, along with Jaye Griffiths, who has previously featured in Silent Witness and Casualty.
