Peter Capaldi is being out of this world cryptic when it comes to who Maisie Williams is playing in Doctor Who.
The Doctor took an age to consider how best to describe Williams’s character, before settling on this teasing single word.
“I don’t want to give away too much about what she does, but what I would say is she is quite ‘cosmic’ really,” explains Capaldi in a new video for BBC America. “She’s not quite what she seems.”
You have been coming up with some truly stellar theories about what Williams could be doing on Who, but seeing her dressed in weird peasant clothes in the latest trailer has made us even more confused.
Showrunner Steven Moffat meanwhile is, predictably, keeping his cards close to his chest: “There’s a very unique, interesting young/old quality there that just fitted in beautifully with what we were looking for,” he said of the actress best known as Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. “But beyond that, you’ll have to watch and see.”
Is that a hint that her character has experience beyond her youthful looks? Her line, “What took you so long old man?” suggests she’s been waiting quite a long time for the Tardis to drop out of the sky.
One thing’s for sure, both Capaldi and Moffat were both bowled over by how mature she was on set.
“She is fantastic. She’s such a gifted actress,” said Capaldi. “The reason I’m saying that with awe is because she’s so young. She turned 18 while she was working with us, and she came in and she did a performance that I thought was so mature and so clever.”
Williams will be appearing in the series nine two-parter, The Girl Who Died followed by The Woman Who Lived. Until then, watch the full video below to see if Capaldi and Moffat give the game away (they don’t) and keep up with our Doctor Who series nine countdown.
