The sun sets on the Abbey in first look at Downton season six

Violet thinks, Robert frowns and Lady Mary wears more lovely hats in first look images from Downton Abbey's sixth and final season

It’s really happening. Downton Abbey is coming to an end after six years and six seasons. If it hadn’t quite sunk in yet – or you still didn’t believe it – just take a look at the main ensemble shot for the upcoming series.

The sun is literally setting on the Abbey as the familiar faces we know and love stand in front of the country pile they all call home.

Our first glimpse at the upcoming season – nine glorious pictures of the Crawleys and co – also includes snapshots of our favourite new couple, the recently engaged Mrs Hughes and Mr Carson, as well as long-running favourites Anna and Bates.

The Dowager Countess can be seen thoughtfully looking into a mirror, while her son Robert frowns and Cora, Mary and Edith pose in lovely hats.

It all makes us rather excited about the series returning to ITV. Asides from the fact that the sooner that happens, the sooner the whole thing will be over…
