Ted Robbins is to follow in the footsteps of his former Phoenix Nights co-stars Peter Kaye and Paddy McGuinness by taking on a role in Coronation Street.
Sixty-year-old Robbins is to play a love interest for Mary Taylor, but the romance will not go as planned.
Speaking today at a press conference, producer Stuart Blackburn revealed that Mary will become a mistress in a love affair with the caddish Brendan and that funny man Robbins dazzled show bosses with his audition.
Said Blackburn: “We’ve got romance and comedy coming up for Mary. We all know how completely passionate she is. She’ll fall in love times 100. Unfortunately, it’s with a ne’er do well called Brendan.
“Fortunately for us, he’s going to be played by the brilliant Ted Robbins, who starts today. He did a fantastic audition. He’s absolutely Corrie through and through, so we’re looking forward to that.”
Robbins will be following in the footsteps of Phoenix Nights cohorts Peter Kaye and Paddy McGuinness
Fellow Phoenix Nights star Paddy McGuinness is set to play jumped-up wilderness expert Dougie Ryan in next week’s episodes of Coronation Street, while Peter Kaye played a fleeting love interest for Rovers’ barmaid Shelley Unwin in 2004.
Robbins’s Corrie signing comes after a period of recuperation following an on-stage collapse during a performance of Phoenix Nights Live at Manchester Arena in January.
Thanking medical staff back in March, Robbins said: “I did my Tommy Cooper impression – God rest him. But I was lucky enough to survive thanks to some wonderful people.”
