Ethan Hawke is fighting a war on the other side of the world from the comfort of a trailer in Las Vegas, but he eventually starts to squirm as innocent civilians are killed. It seems drones in the air need drones on the ground to control them in this thoughtful character study.

INSURGENT (12)
★★

Shailene Woodley and Theo James are on the run from a wicked Kate Winslet in a future that divides people by their virtues – or lack thereof. On the upside, they’re all pretty good-looking, although Charles Darwin may still have had some issues with the plotting here.

THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER (U)
★★★★

Who’d have thought a talking sea sponge could be the source of so much mirth? Paramount Animation squeeze more laughs out of this sequel a decade after the first movie and over 15 years after the cartoon series first aired on Nickelodeon. Antonio Banderas voices a burger-loving pirate.

WOMAN IN GOLD (12)
★★★

Helen Mirren keeps a stiff upper lip as Maria Altmann, an elderly Jewish woman who takes on the Austrian government to reclaim a Gustav Klimt painting stolen from her childhood home by the Nazis on the eve of the Second World War. Ryan Reynolds does the legal eagling.

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray and download

WHITE GOD (15)
★★★★

This is a shaggy dog story unlike the cute and fuzzy Disney tales you’ve seen. Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo follows an unfortunate mutt who seeks revenge on the humans who have mistreated him and his stray friends. Grrr… (No animals were harmed in the making etc.)
