Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin is more than used to devising grisly deaths for his many characters, often to the consternation of his books’ dedicated army of fans.
But while his imagination has seen the Starks, Lannisters and Targaryens subject to beheadings, skewerings – even death by molten golden crown – the author got a taste of his own medicine during a surprise cameo in the third instalment of SyFy’s Sharknado franchise.
Titled “Oh Hell No!” the film – which aired in the US last night – featured appearances from a string of famous faces including David Hasslehoff, Frankie Muniz, Jerry Springer and Martin himself who met his maker in particularly gruesome fashion while taking in a shark movie at the cinema.
Ned Stark probably enjoyed that one.
Speaking about his top secret guest star, Sharknado director Anthony C. Ferrante told The Hollywood Reporter: “We wanted him in the movie, he wanted to be in the movie, so we went to New Mexico, and we shot it for a day.
“He originally had a line – and we’ll add it back in for the DVD – where he went outside, shivered, and said, ‘Winter’s coming.’ But we thought about it and decided that we wanted people to watch it and go, ‘Wait, is that … Is that George R.R. Martin?’”
Yes, it was. And the best bit? The bride in her wedding dress who gets doused in his remains. George RR Martin had his very own Red Wedding.
