Last time you saw her on TV screens Sheridan Smith was sporting a shaved head to play The C Word’s X but now she’s back with a pixie crop fit for a cop in ITV’s Black Work.

The first trailer for the new three-part ITV drama shows Smith in action as PC Jo Gillespie, a young police officer whose life is changed irrevocably when her husband is killed in action.

DS Ryan Gillespie (Kenny Doughty) was deep undercover when he was shot dead, and the mystery surrounding the case he was working on is as complex as his murder.

Against the advice of her superiors (played by Geraldine James and Douglas Henshall), she enlists the help of her friend and colleague Jack Clark (Matthew McNulty) and heads out on the hunt for the killer herself.

“She has two worlds: Her family life and then her police family” says Smith, who has never played a police officer on screen before. “Jo is strong and tough but goes through so much turmoil and mental torment.”

Written by Our Zoo and Suite Francaise screenwriter Matt Charman, Black Work comes from Mammoth Screen, the production company behind ITV’s Endeavour, BBC1’s Poldark and BBC2’s Parade’s End.
