Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them has found its female lead. The Harry Potter spin-off film has cast Inherent Vice actress Katherine Waterson as Porpentina, Newt Scamander’s love interest.
British-born actress Waterson, who has also appeared in Boardwalk Empire and Robot & Frank, will star opposite Eddie Redmayne’s Newt in the upcoming movie, which is set to hit cinemas in 2016.
Waterson’s “pivotal” character Porpentina – Tina, for short – is a witch based in the US, who meets Newt when he “stops in New York City on his travels to find and document magical creatures.”
“Katherine Waterston is a rising star, who was a revelation in our film Inherent Vice, earning the praise of both critics and audiences. We are thrilled to have her back in the Warner Bros. family, especially in one of our most anticipated titles for 2016, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman said yesterday.
JK Rowling also took to Twitter yesterday to say she “couldn’t be happier” with the decision to cast Waterson:

Set in New York City around 70 years before the Boy Who Lived’s well-known story begins, Fantastic Beasts is “neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series.” The film, which is JK Rowling’s screenwriting debut, is based on a Hogwart’s textbook of the same name, which details 75 magical species found around the world and contains the history of Magizoology. Exact plot details are scarce, but the movie could follow Newt as he travels the world and meets all kinds of wild and wonderful beings.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will be in UK cinemas 18th November 2016
