Doctor Who: best guest stars from series 1

As the sci-fi series was rebooted, who were your favourite one-off second fiddles?

Series 1 of the rebooted Doctor Who saw a new Time Lord and companion in Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. But they weren’t alone with a host of talented guest actors every week – and you can pick your favourite below.

Mark Benton

Character: Clive

Episode: Rose

Best known for: Waterloo road and adverts for Nationwide

Conspiracy theorist Clive, later killed by Autons, was a great source of knowledge for new companion Rose.

Zoë Wanamaker

Character: Lady Cassandra

Episodes: The End of the World and New Earth (series 2)

Best known for: My Family

The last human was a pretty thin-skinned individual, but found peace after her nefarious plans came to naught.

Simon Callow

Character: Charles Dickens

Episodes: The Unquiet Dead and The Wedding of River Song (series 6)

Best known for: his work in the theatre

Callow has played Dickens elsewhere, but his turn fighting ghosts alongside the Doctor (and his later cameo in series 6) was definitely the strangest.

Simon Pegg

Character: The Editor

Episode: The Long Game

Best known for: His ‘Cornetto trilogy’ of films with Edgar Wright and Nick Frost including Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz

Pegg’s bleached journalist was an unusual take on a villain, but added a sense of glee and fun to his nefarious deeds as he worked with the Jagrofess.

Richard Wilson

Character: Dr Constantine

Episodes: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

Best known for: Playing Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave

The other Doctor of this two-parter threw himself into his work – with terrible consequences…
