We’ve only just got over our joy at the return of Mulder and Scully in The X-Files revival, but today brings us even more exciting news as the first new addition joins their ranks. And he’s not just any old addition…
Community’s Joel McHale has signed up to star alongside David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in the upcoming limited series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He’ll play Tad O’Malley – the anchor of a popular conservative internet news network who becomes an unlikely ally for Mulder (Duchovny).
McHale is the first newcomer to be added to a cast that already includes Duchovny, Anderson (Scully) and Mitch Pileggi (who played Walter Skinner). Series creator Chris Carter is also back at the helm, writing the new episodes as well as executive-producing with an air date set for 24th January 2016.
The role is McHale’s first since Community wrapped up its sixth series on new home Yahoo! Screen on Tuesday after the cult comedy was cancelled by NBC in 2014. It’s still unclear whether the sitcom will return for a seventh run or finally get the go-ahead for its long-rumoured movie.
After months of speculation, The X-Files’ return was formally announced in March, ending the show’s 13-year absence from screens with the exception of 2008 film The X Files: I Want to Believe. The new series is expected to begin shooting later this year.
