Sophie Webster’s girlfriend Maddie Heath (Amy James-Kelly) has become the second victim of the Victoria Court fire, having just lost her life in scenes just broadcast during tonight’s episodes of Coronation Street.

Her death follows that of gym owner Kal Nazir, who perished in the explosion that rocked the apartment block in last Thursday’s episode of the ITV soap.

Speaking of his decision to kill off the character of Maddie, producer Stuart Blackburn said: “It wasn’t easy. I think she’s an absolutely fantastic actress and a great character. It’s always tough to make a decision like that, but you can’t do something like the fire and not have consequences.

“I’ve also been banging on for ages about how good Brooke Vincent is. People forget. They just think, ‘oh it’s Sophie Webster. She’s been in it for ages.’ So now we’re going to see a coming-of-age story. She is going to cope. She’ll sort out the funeral her way.

“Obviously, it’s agony for her. But it’s time that her parents Kevin and Sally started to see her as a young woman rather than a girl. And that’s partly what this story is about.”

The death of Maddie means that both Kevin and Sophie still remain in the dark about Jenny Bradley’s plan to kidnap Kev’s son Jack.

On the night of the fire Maddie had found Jenny, disguised in a black wig, packing a bag full of Jack’s belongings. After a struggle with Jenny, Maddie managed to escape and ran to tell Sophie what she had discovered.

But as she rounded the corner to where Victoria Court was in flames she got caught up in a huge explosion from the builder’s yard.

Now, in the aftermath of Maddie’s death, Jenny will think that she’s got away with things and stars to resume her plan. But, in the coming weeks, viewers will see Sophie’s suspicions grow – especially when she hears a half garbled message left by Maddy on her phone just seconds before the explosion.

Has Maddie’s death given Jenny a second opportunity to carry out her dastardly plan or has Maddie left a big enough clue from the grave to stop the kidnap plot?
