HBO reveals Games of Thrones’ series 5 finale title…and here’s what we think is in store

Dragons and mothers seem to be the major themes of the last instalments

This series of Game of Thrones has already had plenty of high drama but the final episodes sound like they’re going to be especially spectacular.

HBO has revealed the titles and descriptions for the final two instalments and while we don’t learn much from the synopsis (good news for spoiler-avoiders!), the names are the really intriguing bit.

Episode nine is called The Dance of Dragons, which is also the title of George R.R Martin’s fifth novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. In the book, The Dance with Dragons is the name given to Targaryen civil war of succession between Aegon II and Rhaenyra Targaryen, which resulted in both of their deaths and the ascension of Aegon III.

The season finale, called Mother’s Mercy, will focus on Daenerys, Stannis, Cersei and Jon. Here’s how the synopsis puts it: “Stannis marches. Dany is surrounded by strangers. Cersei seeks forgiveness. Jon is challenged.”

It makes sense to round off the season with the theme of motherhood, given how crucial it’s been in the last few episodes. It’s been the focus in Cersei’s role as queen mother to Tommen, Ramsay Bolton’s stepmother bearing a potential heir, Daenerys’s task of protecting her people and of course, her dragons, Brienne of Tarth’s vow to protect the Stark children’s mother, and lots more maternal plot lines.

The eighth episode Hardhome airs in the UK on Monday June 1st on HBO, with episodes nine and ten airing on June 8th and 15th.
