Now we know who Andy Serkis is playing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Serkis will be using motion capture in Star Wars: Episode VII, and we have also discovered his character's name

There is another name confirmed for Star Wars: The Force Awakens: say hello to the mighty, the terrifying, the enigmatic, Supreme Leader… Snoke?

Yes, Supreme Leader Snoke really is the name of Andy Serkis’s character in Episode VII, as confirmed on

Serkis looks far more intimidating than his name suggests in this photo by US portrait artist Annie Leibovitz, which also confirms the fact that the man who made motion capture an art form with Gollum has once again been strapping on the little white sensors.

What else do we know about our new Supreme Leader?

Well, only that he was the one who uttered the ominous voiceover in the first trailer: “There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side and the light.”

That suggests a character familiar with the ways of the Force – and a title like ‘Supreme Leader’ doesn’t exactly scream ‘Light Side’ does it?

Reaction to the name itself has not exactly been reverential, but then it is sometimes hard to take Star Wars names seriously in isolation (see Qui-Gon, Dooku and Grand Moff).

We’re sure we’ll all adore/fear our new Supreme Leader when he appears on screen this Christmas.
