The Nazirs will stay on Coronation Street following Kal’s death, says show boss Stuart Blackburn

"We're planning right through to the autumn. We've got some great stuff coming up for them"

Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn has revealed that the Nazir family will be sticking around in Weatherfield following the death of Kal (Jimi Mistry).

“We’re planning right through to the autumn. We’ve got some great stuff coming up for them,” says the soap’s boss. “I really enjoy the Nazirs.”

Viewers of tonight’s episode saw gym owner Kal perish in the fire at Victoria Court after saving the lives of Amy Barlow and Leanne Battersby. And tomorrow evening will see Kal’s family dealing with the fallout from the inferno.

“In a way, my favourite episode of this week is Friday’s. All the dust has settled and the Nazirs are dealing with their grief,” continues Blackburn. “They really come into their own and they’re absolutely fantastic. They’ve got a bright future.”

The character of Kal was first introduced to Coronation Street in December 2013, with the rest of his screen family following half a year later. As to what we can expect to see from the surviving members, Blackburn adds:

“Watch out for Zeedan – man, Qasim Akhtar is good. The character’s actually going to get really close with Leanne. He’ll be helping and supporting her because he knows it’s what his dad would have wanted. And we’ve got massive stuff coming for Alya – the grandparents will be involved in that too.”
