The death of Kal Nazir on Coronation Street will result in a grief-stricken Simon Barlow venting his anger on adoptive mum Leanne.
“Kal is yet another male figure in Simon’s life who’s gone,” says producer Stuart Blackburn. “It’s one piece of grief too much for him and he has all these emotions that he can’t handle. He has a line at one point where he says, ‘everyone dies or goes away’. So Simon’s going to take it really hard.”
Viewers of tonight’s episode saw Kal die in the fire at Victoria Court just as he was about to propose marriage to Leanne and eventually become a stepfather to Simon. And, in the wake of Kal’s demise, it’s Leanne who bears the brunt of Simon’s fury.
“It’s a domestic abuse story, essentially,” continues Blackburn. “And Zeedan Nazir will be the first person to find out about it. But for weeks Leanne is going to keep it a secret. Like any of these situations, people can’t help because they don’t know what’s happening. There’s going to be some meaty stuff coming up.”
But the show boss promises that Leanne will end up forming a close bond with the Nazir family in the wake of her trauma. “From a rocky start, it’s a story where Leanne will form a real friendship with Zeedan. And it is a friendship – it’s not going to go anywhere else.
“And the Nazirs continue to take Leanne to their hearts. She was Kal’s woman, so they’re going to stay close to her.”
Blackburn first teased the upcoming plotline back in March when he said: “Leanne Battersby is going to find herself at the centre of a domestic abuse story. But this is a story with a twist. The perpetrator is Leanne’s 12-year-old stepson Simon.”
