TESTAMENT OF YOUTH (12)
★★★★

Alicia Vikander’s star is certainly in the ascendant, having recently appeared as an alluring AI in Ex Machina and taken the lead in this wartime drama, based on the experiences of Vera Brittain. Unlike most stories where the men go off to fight, leaving their loved ones at home, Brittain takes the bold step of following her fiancé (Game of Thrones’ Kit Harrington) and friends to the front lines as a medical volunteer during the First World War.

WILD (15)

Reese Witherspoon stars in this biped take on the road movie. Based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed. Witherspoon plays a divorced young woman who tries to make sense of her life while hiking the Pacific Coast Trail. Both Witherspoon and Laura Dern (playing Strayed’s mother) were recognised with Oscar and Bafta nominations for their outstanding performances.

LIFE OF RILEY (12)
★★★★

Not many directors can claim to have enjoyed the kind of career Alain Resnais had. Over a period of six decades, he dazzled and surprised audiences with the likes of Hiroshima Mon Amour, Last Year at Marienbad and Smoking/No Smoking. This was his final work before his death last year, and showed he was still capable of delivering something original and unexpected – even at the age of 91.
