Here’s a game: imagine every hardbitten line in the trailer for True Detective series two is a friend giving you advice after a bad breakup.
You: “I just don’t know what I’m going to do Vince Vaughan, was it my fault?”
Vince Vaughn: “Sometimes your worst self is your best self.”
You: “She didn’t see it that way. Colin Farrell, you’ve got my back, right?”
Colin Farrell:“My strong suspicion is we get the world we deserve.”
You: “Thanks Colin, that’s picked me right up. Rachel McAdams, anything you want to chip in? My heart is breaking over here.”
Rachel McAdams: “Nobody cares.”
You: “I hate bowling night.”
Also starring Taylor Kitsch and set in a corrupt California, the second series doesn’t feature Woody Harrleson, Matthew McConaughey or the occult trappings of the first, but it certainly seems to preserve the mood and monologues. Even the official artwork looks like a demotivational poster.
The laugh-a-minute buddy cop drama will premiere in America on HBO, 21st June
