Jem and the Holograms movie trailer makes a truly outrageous travesty of the original 80s cartoon

A fun, sassy animated series powered by upbeat soft rock has become insipid and bland, says Paul Jones (who only saw the original animated series by accident because his sister used to watch it, honest)

I remember 80s animated series Jem and The Holograms because my sister – my sister, definitely not me – had it on VHS and used to watch it, like, nine times every weekend.

I remember holographic rock chick Jem and her band, I remember their upbeat soft rock anthems (Only the Beginning is just one that springs to mind) and their arch-enemies, girlband The Misfits.

I remember that Jem’s real identity was Jerrica Benton, owner of Starlight Music (ok, I had to look that bit up) and that the show was fun, sassy, had attitude and was about adventure and romance (again, my sister told me that bit).

So when I sat down to watch the trailer for the live-action movie of Jem and The Holograms I was… not horrified, that would be ridiculous… not incensed, after all it’s just a cartoon… but, you know, not too happy…

Judging by the trailer, the film is full of insipid characters and bland music while half the soundtrack consists of an anodyne One Direction song that basically defeats the object of what should be a girl-power-driven story.

Maybe I’m being harsh – but I’m not alone. When I went to YouTube to try to cleanse myself by watching the intro to the original Jem and The Holograms, I found that other people had had exactly the same thought…

On Twitter, the story was the same…

I know it was only a cartoon, but what they’ve done to it is truly outrageous
