All hail Stannis Baratheon, the one true King of Grammar!
In a lovely little aside in episode five of Game of Thrones this Monday, Stannis just couldn’t help himself from surreptitiously correcting a member of the Night’s Watch when he used the word “less” instead of “fewer”.
“Help the Wildlings? Why would we do that?” said the watchman. “Let them be picked off! Less enemies for us.”
“Fewer,” muttered Stannis under his breath.
“What?” whispered Davos Seaworth.
“Nothing,” said a stony faced Stannis.
He left it at that, but you can understand why he might be a bit grumpy about the whole thing – he’s had to pick Davos himself up on the very same thing before and it’s clear his right-hand man has learnt nothing.
The previous grammar lesson took place in season two when the pair were having a heart-to-heart about the time Stannis cut off Davos’s fingers as a punishment for smuggling.
“It’s four less fingernails to clean,” said Davos (with a commendably glass-half-full outlook).
“Fewer,” replied Stannis. “Four fewer fingernails to clean.”
You’d think that would be a lesson that would stick in your mind…
