Tristan Gemmill joins Coronation Street cast to play Tracy’s ex-husband Robert Preston

Robert will be seen arriving back in time for Deirdre Barlow's funeral

Tracy Barlow’s ex husband Robert Preston is to make a surprise reappearance at the funeral of Deirdre Barlow.

Robert – who will now be played by former Casualty star Tristan Gemmill – will surprise a newly single Tracy, who quickly falls back into his arms.

But chef Robert has omitted to tell her one detail about his new life since they split: he is still married to his second wife, who quickly arrives to lay claim to her man.

Once he familiarises himself with Weatherfield, Robert lands himself a job at the Bistro – but can he win Tracy round after she finds out about his wife?

The character of Robert was originally played by Julian Kay and appeared on the ITV soap between 1996 and 2003, his exit coinciding with his divorce from Tracy.

Tristan Gemmill – who will be seen on screen from July – said of his signing to Corrie: “I’m excited to be joining such an iconic show. Coronation Street is a great British institution and it will be a huge challenge to meet the expectations of its devoted audience. But it is a challenge I am really looking forward to.”

Producer Stuart Blackburn added: “Tristan is a fantastic and classy actor who will bring a real gravitas to the role of Robert Preston. We’re all delighted to have him on board and I can’t wait to see him striding down those famous cobbles.”
