It’s not back on our screens until Christmas Day, but the cast and crew of Call the Midwife are already hard at work.
Lots of familiar faces, from writer and creator Heidi Thomas to the show’s stars Laura Main, Emerald Fennell and Cliff Parisi, started work on BBC1’s hit 60s-set period drama yesterday as the first read-through for series five kicked off in London.
The upcoming episode is a yuletide special, so there was plenty of festive spirit going around, as well as a few mince pies and a generous handful of Quality Street chocolates…
There were also selfies as the cast reunited after months apart.
While Emerald Fennell, who plays midwife Patsy Mount, was clearly excited to be back.
She was also quick to get stuck into the festive snacks on offer…
As was writer Heidi Thomas:
Thomas also took to Twitter the night before to reveal her husband’s (Stephen McGann, who plays Doctor Turner) reaction to the Christmas special. It was a tearful one, naturally.
She also chimed in to talk Britain’s new royal baby, perhaps hinting at the potential for a royal storyline in season five? Oh, go on…
Call the Midwife will return for a fifth series and a Christmas special later this year on BBC1
