Coronation Street star Alison King to take a break from Carla Connor role in 2016

"She wishes to try her hand at other projects," says a spokesperson for the ITV soap

Actress Alison King is to take a sabbatical from her role as factory boss Carla Connor in Coronation Street.

Fan favourite King – who has played no-nonsense Carla since 2006 – is to take some time away from the ITV soap during 2016, although show bosses insist that she will return to Weatherfield.

“Alison King has indicated to producers that she would like to take a sabbatical from the show for creative reasons at some point in 2016. She wishes to try her hand at other projects before returning to the part of Carla Connor, a role she has enjoyed playing for nine years,” said a Coronation Street spokesperson.

Since arriving on Coronation Street, Carla has endured no end of misfortune: two husbands have died, while her brother has been jailed. She has also been the victim of rape, held captive and almost set on fire during a blaze at her beloved underwear factory. Now, it seems that the show writers have more heartache in store for Carla before King makes her exit.

Added the spokesperson: “Before Ali takes her break Carla has much more drama to come. At the end of this month she will be central to the explosive storyline which sees Victoria Court go up in flames, and the aftermath of that plotline will have huge consequences for the factory boss.

“Ali’s desire to take a break from the show gives the writers the opportunity to come up with a enthralling exit for the character.”

It was announced yesterday that Tracy Barlow is to wreak revenge on the residents of Coronation Street after her bid to buy the Rovers Return is foiled by Carla.

Toxic Tracy will try to get her own back on those she feels have crossed her during a dramatic week that sees Steve and Michelle’s wedding coinciding with a massive fire at Victoria Court.

With her landlady dream in tatters, a vengeful Tracy will have a huge showdown with Liz and reveals everything about her and Tony’s affair, as well as their plan to usurp the McDonalds at the Rovers.

While Liz wants to protect Steve and Michelle from the vitriol on their big day, Tracy will stop at nothing to cause havoc and get her own back on the one person she feels always gets the better of her – Carla.
