Gangsters make jokes, but they are never kidding. Joe Pesci is not funny like a clown. Tony Soprano is not just ‘breaking your balls’. And Johnny Depp doesn’t care about steak.
A new trailer for true crime film Black Mass features an almost unrecognisable Depp waxing lyrical about a well marinated piece of meat. The Pirates of the Caribbean star accomplishes the transformation with three techniques: a wig, coloured contact lenses and acting.
Through the actor’s craft, Depp disappears into the role of Boston gangster Whitey Bulger: you truly believe he loves steak, then suddenly realise he doesn’t care about steak after all.
Here Benedict Cumberbatch demonstrates a different school of acting, in which you use a megaphone.
Directed by Scott Cooper, the movie is based on the book Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a Devil’s Deal, by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill. It follows the real-life story of Whitey who headed up a violent gang while simultaneously informing on his rivals to the FBI. The film also features Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple, Joel Edgerton, Jesse Plemons and Adam Scott wearing a moustache.
Black Mass will be released in UK cinemas 25th September 2015.
