Stan the Man crops up in most Marvel connected films, in this case as a WW2 veteran who landed on Omaha beach during D-Day. Lee himself joined the army in 1942, aged 19, and his duties included writing and illustrating military manuals.
‘Excelsior’, the phrase Lee drunkenly mumbles after drinking too much of Thor’s 1000 year old grog, was the editor’s catchphrase at Marvel.
