Sheridan Smith faces up to breast cancer in new trailer for The C Word

Smith stars in a new BBC1 adaptation telling the true story of cancer blogger Lisa Lynch

The first trailer for BBC1 drama The C Word has been released, starring Sheridan Smith as cancer blogger Lisa Lynch.

The 90-minute drama tells the true story of Lisa, who at the age of 28 was diagnosed with breast cancer and decided to write a blog about her experiences.

Lisa Lynch worked closely with screenwriter Nicole Taylor on the adaptation, and was involved in casting Smith to play her shortly before she died in 2013.

2015 Bafta-nominated Smith said, “I’m so sad that Lisa won’t get to see the finished drama, having been so involved in the development of it. I’m honoured and humbled that she wanted me to play her on screen, and I hope that I will make her proud.”

The trailer shows the newly-married Lisa ‘dusting herself down’ following the diagnosis and her decision to write an “uplifting” yet “honest” account of her illness.

Sheridan Smith is up for a Bafta Leading Actress TV award this year for her role in ITV drama Cilla, which has also been nominated for the Radio Times Audience Award.

Former EastEnders actor Paul Nicholls plays Lisa’s husband Pete. Haydn Gwynne (Peak Practice) and Michael Maloney (The White Queen) feature as Lisa’s parents, with Nate Fallows portraying her brother Jamie and Rebekah Staton and Susannah Field confirmed as her friends, Gabby and Abigail.
