From Pinocchio and Dumbo to Mulan and Cinderella, Disney has decided the future is live action remakes of their popular classics. But while Lily James may be the incumbent belle of the ball in cinemas, 2017 will see Emma Watson play the original Belle in the new Beauty and the Beast update.
First announced last year, the movie musical stars the Harry Potter actress in the lead role, alongside former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens playing – believe it or not – the Beast. The pair, along with co-stars Luke Evans (Gaston), Kevin Kline (Maurice) and Frozen star Josh Gad (Le Fou), have assembled for the first time in a goofy snap posted on Gad’s Instagram page with a caption alluding to Lumiere’s famous song from the 1991 Disney original…
With filming expected to begin in London in mid-May, the cast is continuing to grow with the announcement yesterday that Ian McKellen had signed on to play Cogsworth.
Directed by Bill Condon (Twilight: Breaking Dawn), the film will also feature Bafta Rising Star nominee Gugu Mbatha Raw as Plumette and Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts. Beauty and the Beast is currently set for release on 17th March 2017.
