After months of speculating about the second series of True Detective, fans finally have a first look at Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Colin Farrell in all their crime-solving glory.
Set to a beautiful, mournful song, the trailer begins with a shot of the industrial landscape of Los Angeles, and then reveals the key characters. Note Farrell’s impressive moustache.
There’s little plot detail revealed, but it’s clear from the punch-ups, lonely drinking and haunting stares that the three detectives have complicated lives, and more than a little psychological baggage.
McAdams looks seriously tough as Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective, who HBO says is “often at odds with the system she serves”.
The story begins when Paul Woodrugh (played by Taylor Kitsch), a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol, discovers a crime scene which begins an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.
Some fans have wondered— often under the hashtag #TrueDetectiveSeason2— how the new cast in series two could live up to the brilliant performances given by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the first instalment. And while we won’t know until we actually see the show, the trailer suggests that the new series might be just as strange, clever and gripping.
HBO also revealed that the show will air on 21 June 2015 in the US.
