It’s time to put on some 70s tunes and get into a groove. Guardians of the Galaxy – the highest-grossing superhero film of 2014 – is poised to make a return. It won’t be in cinemas for a while yet, but that’s no reason not to get excited as news begins to seep out of Hollywood about the Marvel sequel. Here’s what we know so far…
It’s going to be filmed in Atlanta
The first film was shot in the UK but, thanks to a little-known franchise called Star Wars, the Guardians will head across the Atlantic to film their sequel. The new superhero flick will come to life at Pinewood Atlanta Studios, home of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War and Ant-Man.
Shooting starts in 2016
The cast and crew will be back in front of and behind the cameras as of next February. (Top tip: keep an eye on director James Gunn’s Instagram account for backstage snaps once they start rolling.)
All the Guardians will be back
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista will all be reprising their roles as Peter Quinn, Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax. Sounds like the galaxy will be sufficiently guarded.
Karen Gillan will be in it
We last saw her cutting off her own hand and flinging herself off Dark Aster, but it seems Nebula came out of that little scuffle unscathed. Former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan will be back as the blue-skinned villain in the sequel. No word yet on whether that means she will be taking a razor to her ginger locks again…
But Lee Pace won’t
*SPOILER ALERT* Ronan really did die, James Gunn has since revealed: “Ronan is a bad guy, we killed him. Not everything is going to happen in the movies the same as the comics.”
Work on the new screenplay is well underway
Plot details might be scarce, but the outline for the sequel is all there. “I turned in my treatment,” Gunn said last week. “I’m going to meet about it on Friday and we will start working on the screenplay next week.”
The screenplay could focus on Quill’s father
“It’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that,” Gunn said earlier this year on a podcast. But don’t go thinking you’ve got that plot point all sorted out, comic book fans. “It’s different than what’s in the comic books. Peter Quill’s father is somebody different in the comics,” says Gunn.
The sequel could impact on the Marvel universe as a whole
“We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole,” revealed Gunn.
It’s a “risky” plot
Whatever you’re thinking, think big. According to Gunn this is the reaction he first got from his Marvel bosses: “I went in and I sat down with those guys and I’m like, ‘Okay, here’s what I think the sequel should be.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’” Sounds exciting, right?
The Guardians of the Galaxy will be in cinemas 5th May 2017
