Political parties aren’t often deliberately funny but today – with a little help from Joey Essex – the Liberal Democrats proved they have a sense of humour.
It all began with party leader Nick Clegg being interviewed by the former TOWIE star. The chat – which will be aired as part of ITV2’s Educating Joey Essex special General Election, what are you saying?! – took an interesting turn when Essex asked the Deputy Prime Minister about his party’s name.
“There used to be a Liberal Party and then the Social Democrats and they got together,” Clegg explained, according to The Mirror, to which a confused Joey replied: “I thought it was quite a weird word in it – it’s got cats in it. What’s the cats about?”
“It’s not cats, it’s crats,” came the bemused response.
“Oh, it’s crats? I thought it was Liberal Demo-cats.” This coming from the man who struggled to tell the time and thought swimming pools turned purple if you peed in them – so we shouldn’t be all that surprised.
This exchange was, of course, followed by a selfie…

… but the Lib Dems’ next move did surprise.
Their official website – which usually bears the party’s traditional logo (see left) depicting the liberty bird – was temporarily replaced by a ginger kitten alongside Joey’s newly-coined “Liberal Democats” (see below, top left). Don’t know about you but we rather like it…
The site has since returned to its formal guise and political news is once again about speeches, canvassing and squabbling. But for a brief moment, the Lib Dems were the cats that got the cream.
