The organisers of this year’s British Soap Awards have ditched the Sexiest Male and Female prize in favour of a new category that rewards issue-based storylines.
The ceremony – which is due to take place in Manchester on 16th May – will axe the viewer-voted Sexiest category for the first time in its 16-year history.
Last years’s event saw Danny Mac scoop the Male award for his role as Dodger Savage in Hollyoaks, while Michelle Keegan took home the Female prize for her portrayal of Tina McIntyre in Coronation Street.
A spokesperson for the British Soap Awards commented to the Daily Star Sunday: “It was time to have a bit of a freshen-up. We’ve had great fun celebrating the soap world’s sexiest for the last 16 years but it was time to make a few changes.
“The awards will still be a big, fun celebration but we’ve found a lot of the actors and actresses are a bit embarrassed by the ‘sexiest’ tag. Michelle never understood why she kept winning but was always very flattered. And Danny Dyer, who was nominated last year, found it all a bit of a joke.”
Speaking to Radio Times last year about his Sexiest Male nomination, EastEnders star Danny Dyer said: “I’m pushing 40, I’ve got a beer belly and I’m growing a pair of moobs. To every pot-bellied man out there, there’s hope for you all.”
