Emilia Clarke turned down Fifty Shades of Grey role to avoid “being labelled” for doing nudity

The Game of Thrones actress said she was uncomfortable with the level of nudity required to play Anastasia Steele – a part which eventually went to Dakota Johnson

On the day that Sam Taylor-Johnson officially quit the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, one Game of Thrones actress has revealed that she too went cold on the subject of the EL James adaptation – leading her to pass on the role that eventually went to Dakota Johnson.

Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenaerys Targaryen in the HBO drama, told the Hollywood Reporter that she took two meetings with Johnson during the casting process but ultimately turned the part down.

“I’d done nudity before and was concerned with being labelled for doing it again,” Clarke explained, having appeared naked in the series one finale of Game of Thrones as well as onstage during a 2013 Broadway run of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, adding that she had “no regrets” about turning down the steamy role.

News of Clarke’s almost-casting doesn’t come of a massive surprise to us, of course – RadioTimes.com readers voted her their top choice for the role back in 2013 with over 58% of the vote. Now if only Matt Bomer would admit he turned the role down too, we’d really be able to prove what trendsetters we are…
