If you want to cast an odd, wizard-like figure to travel around encountering weird and wonderful monsters you could do worse than cast a former Doctor – and so it’s not entirely surprising that Matt Smith is rumoured to be involved with JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film.
According to The Sun, Smith is the favourite to play “magizooligist” Newt Scamander, the author of the titular wizarding textbook which Rowling created for World Book Day in 2001 and is now adapting into a feature-length movie.
While we here at RadioTimes.com are still rooting for Luke Newberry to take the lead (#LukeForNewt for life), some fans are keen to see the former Doctor trade his sonic screwdriver for a magic wand, setting up a Change.org petition to land Smith the role.
And while this is all just hearsay at the moment, it’s not the most left-field piece of casting – after all, Doctor Who and Harry Potter have a long history of sharing actors.
But what do you think? Is Smith the Scamander for you, or is there no broom for him on the Quidditch pitch? Vote now.
