Jennifer Lawrence to leave X-Men film series

The Oscar-winning Hunger Games actress confirmed her departure after next year's X-Men: Apocalypse

Bad news, blue bodypaint fans – Jennifer Lawrence is set to leave the X-Men films after 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

“It is my last one, actually,” Lawrence told MTV on the red carpet for her latest film Serena, confirming rumours that she was scheduled to leave the superhero series once she fulfilled her contractual obligations as shapeshifting mutant Mystique.

There had been rumours that Fox was interested in basing a series of spin-off films around Lawrence’s character, but the actress’ comments would seem to indicate that idea hasn’t taken flight.

Lawrence first appeared in 2011’s X-Men: First Class as the future mutant rebel, but has since become a much bigger star thanks to her starring role in the dystopic Hunger Games franchise and Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook.

Her role was accordingly bulked up for last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past (and possibly will be for the next film as well), but it’s no surprise the bonafide A-lister is keen to leave a franchise where she plays second fiddle to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.

That, or she was just sick of all the hours in the makeup chair…

X-Men: Apocalypse will be released in UK cinemas on 19th May 2016
