Armando Iannucci has a plan to reunite with his The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi by writing an episode of Doctor Who for him.
Capaldi played bile-spewing spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in Iannucci’s BBC political satire before taking up his post as the current Doctor. Self-confessed Doctor Who fan Iannucci says he has spoken to those behind the show about the possibility of penning an adventure but that he’s yet to identify a space in his schedule while he continues work on his US comedy Veep.
“I’m a big fan of Doctor Who and obviously with Peter, who’s loving it, it would be nice to,” said Iannucci. “I’ve spoken off and on to them but it’s a case of being able to fit something in. It’s a nice thought.”
Iannucci said he even had an idea for a story. “In our conversations there was an idea we had, but it may be a wee while yet before we get round to working out when it would be,” he told the Guardian. “Knowing I am committed for the next year or so, it’s all on hold. Let’s get back in touch when we can.”
Whatever his idea might be, one thing’s for sure, Iannucci will have no trouble writing edgy dialogue for Capaldi’s new darker, more cantankerous Time Lord.
Capaldi is currently filming series nine of Doctor Who, for broadcast on BBC1 later this year
