HOME ★★★

The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons provides the voice of a homesick alien who seeks the help of a feisty girl (voiced by Rihanna), in this lively, colourful animated tale that’s a cross between ET and Lilo & Stitch.

THE GUNMAN ★★

Sean Penn tries to do a Liam Neeson with this thriller from the director of  Taken. Sadly, he lacks Neeson’s charisma and the action scenes are equally limp.

THE VOICES ★★★★

This darkly comic serial killer tale sees Ryan Reynolds operating way out of his comfort zone (and doing an amazing job), playing a seemingly mild-mannered everyman who just happens to be a psychotic killer with a severed head in his fridge and two talking animals for company.

INSURGENT ★★

The sequel to hit YA adaptation Divergent has some good performances, particularly from heroine Shailene Woodley and villain Kate Winslet, but the rest is a boring disappointment.

WILD CARD ★★

Jason Statham’s hardman talents are underused in this misguided attempt to fuse punch-’em-up action with comedy and sensitive drama.
