BARRY NORMAN: FILM OF THE DAY

Outbreak ★★★★
10.50pm-1.15am C5

An escaped African monkey spreads an Ebola-like virus in a California town, causing fever, skin disease, multiple death and panic. Can doctors Dustin Hoffman, his ex-wife Rene Russo and military scientists Kevin Spacey and Cuba Gooding Jr find a cure before the whole state is afflicted? And to what lengths will the military and the government go to stop this happening? An interesting enough medical disaster movie, given topical relevance by the recent Ebola outbreak in Africa and nicely played by a strong cast but somehow not actually all that thrilling.

Sinister ★★★★
9.00-11.10pm Film Four

Prepare to be chilled to the bone as struggling crime scribe Ethan Hawke and family move into a house where the previous occupants came to a gruesome end. Some writers will do anything for inspiration.

Edward Scissorhands ★★★★★
6.55-9.00pm Film Four

In the first of eight collaborations (so far) with  Johnny Depp, director Tim Burton takes a literally scathing swipe at life in American suburbia. It’s a dark fairy tale that never fails to move.

Lost in Yonkers ★★★
6.45-9.00pm Movie Mix

In this witty adaptation of the Neil Simon play, Richard Dreyfuss plays a criminal who returns home to hide out, causing ructions with his mother, sister and nephews.

Precious (Base on Nol by Saf) (Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire) ★★★★
11.20pm-1.05am BBC4

This challenging, affecting and finally liberating drama stars the impressive Gabourey Sidibe as a neglected, abused girl who discovers her self-worth.
