Maggie Smith is almost unrecognisable in the first look trailer for new film The Lady in the Van.
The Downton Abbey star has swapped pearls and silk for fingerless gloves, heavy-duty coats and woollen caps. Instead of taking tea with acquaintances or hobnobbing at social soirees, she’s shouting at children and painting a van. A van which she is living in on a driveway in North London…
Smith stars in the real-life story as Miss Shepherd, a homeless pensioner who lived on writer Alan Bennett’s (Alex Jennings) driveway for 15 years during the 70s and 80s.
Bennett, 80, has penned the script, while Nicholas Hytner, who also directed Bennett’s The Madness of King George and The History Boys, led the project.
Roger Allam, Frances de la Tour, Jim Broadbent, James Corden and Dominic Cooper also star in the movie, based on Bennett’s play of the same name.
The Lady in the Van is in UK cinemas 13th November
