Stephen Hawking congratulates Eddie Redmayne on Oscars win

Redmayne played the theoretical physicist in biopic The Theory of Everything

Physicist Stephen Hawking has publicly congratulated Eddie Redmayne for his Oscar win on Sunday, after the actor played Hawking in biopic The Theory of Everything.

Writing on his Facebook page, Hawking said: “Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an ‪Oscar for playing me in The Theory of Everything Movie. Well done Eddie, I’m very proud of you.”

Redmayne’s win at the Academy Awards ends a run of accolades including wins at the Screen Actors’ Guild, the Golden Globes and the Baftas, the latter of which saw Hawking take to the red carpet in support of the film.

Speaking at Sunday’s Oscars ceremony as he picked up his gold statuette,  Redmayne said: “Oh my God. Thank you. Thank you to the Academy. I don’t think I’m capable of articulating how I feel. But I am fully aware that I am a lucky, lucky man.

“This Oscar, this belongs to every person around the world battling ALS, and one exceptional family Stephen, Jane, Jonathan and the Hawking children. I will be his custodian. I will look after him, polish him, answer his beck and call and wait on him on hand and foot.”
