The perennially unpredictable Nicolas Cage seems finally to be getting serious again, with the actor reportedly joining the ranks of Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden biopic.
Cage will play a former U.S. Intelligence official in the movie thriller, which is based on Luke Harding’s book The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man.
The film will follow Snowden’s handing over of classified NSA documents to then-Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, as well as his later quest for asylum in Russia.
Other confirmed cast members include Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden and The Fault in our Stars’ Shailene Woodley as Snowden’s girlfriend. Zachary Quinto, Rhys Ifans, Tom Wilkinson and Melissa Leo will also feature.
The casting news (via Variety) comes after another film concerned with Snowden, documentary Citizenfour, won the Oscar for Best Documentary at the 2015 Academy Awards.
Speaking at the ceremony, Citizenfour director Laura Poitras said, “The disclosures of Edward Snowden don’t only expose a threat to our privacy but to our democracy itself. When the decisions that rule us are taken in secret we lose the power to control and govern ourselves.”
She added: “I share this award with Glenn Greenwald and the many other journalists who are taking risks to expose the truth.”
