Gogglebox rules Friday night with biggest audience ever

The Channel 4 reality show was the most-watched programme at 9pm as it returned for a new fifth series

More of us than ever are watching people watch TV… Channel 4’s Gogglebox pulled in its highest ever overnight viewing figures as it returned on Friday for series five, with four million tuning in as the hit reality show claimed victory in the 9pm slot.

Gogglebox’s 18.3% share of the audience was enough to beat swashbuckling BBC1 drama The Musketeers (3.02 million; 14%) ITV’s new Bear Grylls celebrity-fuelled series Mission: Survive (2.94 million; 13.6%), BBC2 travelogue Italy Unpacked (1.27 million; 6.4%) and NCIS: New Orleans on Channel 5 (0.91million; 4.2%).

The opening episode saw the country’s favourite couch potatoes giving their two cents on everything from UKIP: The First 100 Days to 50 Shades of Grey.

The ratings success rounds off a good month for Channel 4’s popular Friday night offering, which was nominated for Best Factual Entertainment series at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.

A spin-off chat show, hosted by Kent guesthouse owners Steph and Dom Parker, is also currently in development, following on from their one-off special with UKIP’s Nigel Farage, which proved rather popular when it aired in December 2014.

“We are looking forward to it very much,” Steph told RadioTimes.com at the Radio Times Covers’ Party in January. “We haven’t got the line up quite yet.”

She did reveal that Jeremy Paxman is top of her wish list though, along with David Cameron. Of course.

Wether either man will be brave enough to face the nation on their sofa remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure though, Paxman never got ratings like that on Newsnight…

Gogglebox series five continues on Channel 4 on Fridays at 9pm
