Bryan Singer is known for snapping behind-the-scenes pictures on his sets, and upcoming superhero sequel X-Men: Apocalypse is no exception.

The latest image appears to show a small figure looking up at a mysterious large floating piece of technology. While Singer gives no clues as to what exactly is going on in the Instagram post, we at RadioTimes.com have a theory…

In the comics, the titular Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac) is the world’s first mutant who is born in Ancient Egypt and eventually battles the X-Men in the present day – but this picture might be showing us his start.

As a young boy, En Sabah Nur (his real name) discovers an enormous sentient spaceship, and uses its advanced technology to become Apocalypse and enact his plans for mutant supremacy. So maybe we’re getting a sneak peek of that moment now and will get a bit of the villain’s backstory in the film.

Singer has previously posted images of the set being built for the upcoming movie, which will see the return of Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, with new additions Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alex Ship taking over the roles of heroes Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm respectively.

While Patrick Stewart has confirmed he won’t be appearing in the film as the older version of telepathic leader Professor X (alongside McAvoy), he said that McKellen might return as the older Magneto. This could suggest Singer is adapting the alternate timeline “Age of Apocalypse” story, which saw the Professor murdered and his enemy Magneto taking over the X-Men while Apocalypse was free to rule the world.
