Ahead of the penultimate episode of ITV’s whodunnit, Radio Times catches up with actress Eve Myles aka suspect Claire Ripley…
What was it like joining a hit show like Broadchurch?
It was somewhat of an out-of-body experience, because I was such a fan of the first series. It was electrifying suddenly to be thrust into it, and I loved every minute.
You have children. Do you find the storylines upsetting?
Without a shadow of a doubt, yes. It’s very, very upsetting. My best friend, who’s another mum, said to me at the school gate, “It’s every parent’s nightmare,” and it is.
People at RT think your character Claire killed both girls. Was it you?
I couldn’t possibly say – but I love hearing what everyone thinks.
Do you know who the killer is?
Who says there’s a murderer! I know how it ends, but not how they’ve cut it together. The cast haven’t seen anything. I have an idea of where the producers are going with the ending, but not how they’ve actually done it.
Did they film different endings?
Yes, so it’s quite hard for me to tell exactly what will be broadcast, because they made us do so many retakes. I do know what happens to my character, because I’ve filmed my bit, but I wasn’t really ever in scenes with the Latimers so I don’t know how they’ve resolved the storyline about Danny, their dead son.
Some papers have called series two “Boredchurch”. Are you disappointed by the reaction?
Not really. With something so successful, when it’s so heavily anticipated, you’re going to get people not enjoying it as much as the first series. It’s a brilliant drama, but what gets highlighted is the negative stuff. At least people are talking about it!
You were in Doctor Who with David Tennant, so you must have felt at home on Broadchurch.
We were never actually on set together in Doctor Who! There was a conversation with the Doctor through a monitor. But it’s been really nice working with David on Broadchurch.
What can’t you miss on TV?
I know this sounds ridiculous, but Broadchurch! None of the cast has seen the show, so we have to watch it when it goes out live, just like everyone else. Other than that, I’ve been watching Breaking Bad for a second time. I’m addicted to it.
What do you watch with your husband [Human Traffic actor Bradley Freegard]?
Countryfile. We love it. It makes me feel all warm and cosy. My husband would probably leave me for John Craven. Every year I buy him the Countryfile calendar, and if I forget, he sulks.
What makes you switch off?
Jeremy Kyle. It frightens me. There are people on there I wouldn’t know what to do with. I’d tell them to calm down, watch Countryfile.
What would it take to get you into the I’m a Celebrity jungle?
Nothing you could offer me in all the world.
