B&Q customers could be doing it themselves following the Valentine’s release of the Fifty Shades of Grey film…
The hardware giant is apparently expecting sales of rope, tape and cable ties to soar after the bondage-based movie hits cinemas, and has asked staff to familiarise themselves with EL James’ naughty novel, and prepare for inquiries of a sensitive nature.
The DIY chain, which “anticipates the need for extra stock” of certain items, is reportedly delivering a copy of the steamy tale to every store so that staff can read up on Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele’s bedroom exploits and better understand “how some products that B&Q stock feature in the film.”
“Preview footage depicts a notable scene from the book where Christian Grey visits a hardware store to purchase rope, cable ties and tape. Rather than bought for home improvement purposes, these products are intended to fulfil Mr Grey’s unconventional sexual pursuits,” reads an internal memo sent out to B&Q’s 20,887 strong workforce.
It is anticipated that fans of the film might head to hardware stores “to recreate their own ‘Fifty Shades’ experiences” and B&Q is keen that its staff are ready to “handle potentially sensitive customer questions.”
“Queries may be unusual and sensitive in nature but staff are reminded of B&Q’s commitment to assist customers in a polite, helpful and respectful manner. A level of discretion is also advised,” adds the briefing.
“B&Q remains committed to serving our customers in all their DIY needs and we strive to prepare our staff for any enquiry. Customer satisfaction is always our number one priority,” said the store when RadioTimes.com asked for a comment.
Fifty Shades of Grey is in UK cinemas from 13th February
