13 times Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson poured cold water on Fifty Shades of Grey

Fans might be besides themselves that Fifty Shades of Grey hits cinemas this Friday, but the film's stars don't always seem that excited...

So you’re a Fifty Shades of Grey fan. You might even be one of the brave ones who brazenly read the novel on public transport – and you can’t wait to see it transported to the big screen when the film hits UK cinemas later this week.

You and your inner goddess are well and truly invested in EL James’s “mad back-and-forth love story“. And, naturally, you’d like it if the film’s stars were too.

You know it’s not real. Obviously. Jamie Dornan isn’t actually an S&M-obsessed millionaire who’s rarely seen without a silky grey tie (he’s too busy creeping around alleyways in Northern Ireland, right?). But, still, you want the stars to love the book as much as you do…

Dakota Johnson: “Even now there are moments when I think, ‘What the f*** have I done?’” – Telegraph

And to like the characters.

Jamie Dornan: “I don’t think I would like him if he was a real dude and we met” – Glamour

Well, you at least want to know the two leads had instant chemistry.

Jamie Dornan: “Yeah… I mean, I presume we did because they made it happen with us” – The Today Show

Or for them to just, erm, enjoy each others company.

[Director] Sam Taylor-Johnson: “It’s a movie. It was work. They get along fine”-  USA Today

Okay, never mind.

You want them to be true to EL James’ creation.

Jamie Dornan: “Nobody can walk in and embody what she wants. It doesn’t exist” – Culture magazine

Or excited about filming.

Jamie Dornan: “The first day [of filming] was kind of an out-of-body experience. I got there and they said, ‘Action!’ I’m like, ‘What the f*** is happening? I’m a dad. What?'” – Glamour

Er, really get into those sex scenes…

Dakota Johnson: “It’s not like a romantic situation… It’s like more of a task” – The Today Show

Embrace the subject matter, at least.

Jamie Dornan: “The dominant was our sort-of adviser on the job. So I watched him do his thing… I didn’t enjoy it massively, but it was helpful to a point” – Notebook magazine

Enjoy themselves.

Jamie Dornan: “I would apologise in advance and say, ‘I’m probably not going to derive a huge amount of pleasure out of this. I want you to know that'” – Notebook magazine

Just a tiny bit.

Dakota Johnson: “At first I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is the worst thing ever,’ and then I was like, ‘All right, let’s get on with it'” – Time

Or maybe let loose a little?

Jamie Dornan: “Some of the Red Room stuff was uncomfortable. There were times when Dakota was not wearing much, and I had to do stuff to her that I’d never choose to do to a woman” – Glamour

Okay. Well, you definitely want them to be proud of the film they’ve made.

Dakota Johnson: I don’t want my family to see [the movie], because it’s inappropriate. Or my brothers’ friends, who I grew up with. I think they’d be like, ‘Blegh.’ Also there’s part of me that’s like, I don’t want anyone to see this movie. Just kidding” – Glamour

Or think that you’ll like it?

Jamie Dornan: “I fear I’ll get murdered, like John Lennon, by one of those mad fans at the premiere… a lot of people are very angry that I’m playing this character” – Details
