The stalwart character of Katie Sugden (Sammy Winward) has been killed off in a fight with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) during tonight’s double bill of Emmerdale.
Shock scenes saw Robert lose his temper after he realised he’d been targeted in a honey trap. During an argument, Robert ended up throwing Katie across some unsafe flooring at Wylie’s Farm, only for the boards to give way and Katie to lose her life after plunging to the lower level.
The row had broken out after Robert’s lover Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller) had messaged Katie to let her know that the two of them were going to be together at Wylie’s. When Katie showed up, she finally got the photographic evidence she needed that Robert was cheating on fiancée Chrissie White.
Speaking about the confrontation that viewers have just witnessed, actor Danny Miller told RadioTimes.com: “All Aaron wants to do is help Robert through this duality problem that he’s dealing with. The only way he thinks he can do it is by shocking him and backing him into a corner.”
But Aaron’s plan for Robert to recognise his sexuality backfired when the groom-to-be said that he was still planning to marry Chrissie. With Aaron having stormed off in disgust, the stage was set for a physical confrontation between Robert and Katie that resulted in the latter meeting her maker.
Now, though, Robert has begun spinning his version of events to Aaron after calling him back to the scene. Despite Robert having erased the incriminating photo and brought about Katie’s demise, he’s claiming to Aaron that Katie deleted the image and merely fell through the flooring by herself without him pushing her first.
As the credits rolled, viewers were left wondering whether Aaron would believe Robert and come to his aid or leave him to face the police. On his character being caught up in the on-screen death of Katie, actor Danny Miller added:
“Katie has been an integral part of Emmerdale. And I’d imagined that the character would just leave. There was no reason to think that Aaron would be having anything to do with her exit.
“So to find out that I was going to be working so closely with Sammy right at the end of her contract was touching. And even though the scenes were dramatic, we had to keep the filming fun for Sammy.”
And as to whether Robert will end up manipulating Aaron yet further, the actor commented: “Aaron got Katie there in the first place. And, of course, Robert is very quick to say that the whole thing is Aaron’s fault. Robert will do anything he can to deflect the blame, but he doesn’t realise what all this is doing to Aaron’s mental state.
“Aaron doesn’t deal with guilt with very well. And we know that he often ends up hurting himself at times like this. So for Robert to do this is very cruel.”
Tonight’s episodes marked the end of actress Sammy Winward’s 14-year association with Emmerdale. Speaking in an interview earlier this month, she said of her departure from the ITV soap: “I’m going to miss everyone terribly. I’ve loved every second of playing Katie, but no one becomes an actor to play just one role, so now it’s time for me to move on.”
Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV
