Lost River debuts its first full-length trailer and we’re still not really sure what’s going on

Ryan Gosling's directorial debut stars Christina Hendricks, Matt Smith, Eva Mendes and Saoirse Ronan - but got panned by critics last year

The critics were not kind to Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and, nine months on, we’re yet to see the finished product.

It’s a shame, really, as the film boasts plenty of star power. A-list actor Gosling may be inexperienced behind the camera but he’s delighted audiences on screen in the likes of Drive, Blue Valentine and, of course, The Notebook. And his script for Lost River (previously titled How to Catch a Monster) succeeded in attracting plenty of famous faces, among them Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Gosling’s real-life partner Eva Mendes.

But when the first teaser was released online last May, we weren’t entirely sure what was going on – and today’s new full-length trailer hasn’t left us much the wiser. So, just what is Lost River all about?

According to the synopsis, “Lost River is a dark fairy tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger. In the virtually abandoned city of Lost River, Billy (Hendricks), a single mother of two, is led into a macabre underworld in her quest to save her childhood home and hold her family together.

“Her teenage son Bones (Iain De Casestecker) discovers a mystery about the origins of Lost River that triggers his curiosity and sets into motion an unexpected journey that will test his limits and the limits of those he loves.”

Confusing enough, although today’s trailer does give us a first glimpse of Lost River itself, plus a look at Mendes’ bloody role and more of Matt Smith rapping about his muscles (who doesn’t want that, eh?)

But as to what to expect when this finally hits screens, well, your guess is as good as ours. The good news? We’ve not long to wait as Lost River is getting a limited release in US cinemas on 10th April, but will be widely available on VOD the same day. Oh, and while you wait, there’s this mysterious new poster to gaze at…
